National Awards

These are Nationally recognized awards that are commonly presented at the Squadron, but have nomination or selection bodies outside of the Squadron:

Title Picture Description
Lord Strathcona Medal Lord Strathcona Medal Lord Strathcona Medal Medal awarded to a Cadet based on criteria stated in Sp Gp Order 5027-4.
Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence Legion Medal of Excellence Legion Medal of Excellence Medal awarded to a Cadet based on criteria stated in CATO 13-16. Presented by a representative of the Legion.
Air Cadet Service Medal Air Cadet Service Medal Air Cadet Service Medal Medal awarded to cadets who have completed four (4) continuous years of service with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

Effective October 1, 2020, the Support Group Order 5027-4 was released, detailing the procedures and processes related to the Lord Strathcona Medal including the selection process, criteria, requirements and procedures.

Top Junior Marksmanship Award (John Switzer Award) Jr_Marksmanship Presented to the Jr cadet who achieves the most consistent scores while demonstrating consistent improvement.
1st Year Shooting Award (Jack & Donna Bastedo Award) 1st_yr_shooting Presented to the 1st yr cadet who achieves the best grouping target
Drill (Capt Jeff & Catherine Swan) Drill This award is presented to the cadet who consistently shows the most effort in perfecting and maintaining the highest standard of drill. Cadet is selected by TrgO, Trg Staff and SWO.
First Year Effort (Jim’s Signs & Trophies Award) 1st_yr_effort Presented to the 1st year Cadet that strives to do the best he or she can at all times. This Cadet is enthusiastic, and their effort and determination do not go unnoticed.
First Year Achievement (Earle & Betty Armstrong Award) 1st_yr_achievement Presented to the best overall 1st year Cadet. This Cadet has strived to do his or her best in all Squadron activities, and maintains a high standard of dress and deportment.
Best Dressed Cadet (450 ‘Sabre’ Wing RCAFA Award) Best_Dressed This award is presented annually to the Cadet whose dress and deportment are second to none. This individual's bearing and uniform are such that they set the acceptable standard for their peers. Award selected by Cadet Commander, Deputy Commander and SWO.
Most Improved Cadet (Bob Foss Award) Most_Improved This award is presented to the cadet who has shown steady improvement in all areas of training.
Ms Gloria Orr Memorial Award for LHQ Citizenship (Sponsored by 450 Wing RCAFA) Citizenship Presented to the top cadet for attendance at community service with the Squadron.
Vic Hal Memorial Award for Community Service CommunityService Presented to the top 1st or 2nd year cadet for attendance at community service with the Squadron.
Most Valuable Cadet (Ted & Joan Dew Award) Most_Valuable This award is presented to a cadet whose enthusiasm is second to none. A cadet who works hard at all times, who can be counted on in a crunch, and who attends all Squadron activities, and gives his/her all. This cadet would be hard to replace.
Exertion Excellence ExertionExcellence Each year the Squadron participates in the Exertion Competition. This award is presented to a Cadet whose effort in the preparation of the Squadron's team and during the competition is an outstanding example for other members of the team.
Junior NCM (James Wynn Award) Jr_NCM "Awarded for a continuous effort to learn and fulfill the aims of the Cadet movement and undoubtedly will go on to be one of the future Squadron leaders. Award selected by secret ballot from all Senior NCMs.
Senior NCM Award (Doug and Nadia Holmes Award) Sr_NCM Awarded to a senior ranking Cadet who has not forgotten the aim of developing new and junior cadets. This Cadet has developed leadership skills, and can be counted on to set a good example. Award selected by secret ballot from all Junior NCMs.
Squadron Spirit (Bernie Curran Award) Sqn_Spirit Awarded to a Cadet whose presence at Squadron activities lifts everyone's spirit. This Cadet is generally an easy going person with a very pleasant personality. Award selected by secret ballot by all NCMs.
Gliding Scholarship Award (Larry Gates Memorial Award) Glider_Scholarship Presented to the top cadet achieving the gliding scholarship.
Flying Scholarship Award (Tom Dailey Award) Flying_Scholarship Presented to the top cadet achieving the power scholarship.
Flag Party Commander (Arnold Herder Award) Flag_Party_Cdr Senior cadet earning the position of Flag Party Commander within the Squadron.
Catalina Award Catalina A wing award (shared between 58, 585, 661, 870 and 999 Sqns) each unit nominates one outstanding Cadet from their unit who promotes the spirit of being an air cadet at their unit.
